Crisis Ministry

For assistance with food, clothing, household items, utilities, heating, rent/mortgage, please visit us at one of the Crisis Ministry locations listed below. You do not need an appointment to be seen. All clients are seen on a "first come, first served" basis. 

Persons are welcome to apply for heating assistance when they have a final notice or are out of oil, etc.  However, funds from the Crisis Intervention Program (CIP) will only be used when the temperature is 32 degrees or below AND someone in the household's life will be threatened due to a verifiable medical condition, being elderly, or a child under age 6 AND there are no other funds available to pay the bill.  Please bring ALL the following application documents for heating assistance: (1) final notice bill for electric or gas or measured number of inches of oil in tank,  (2) a medical statement from a doctor stating the medical condition and that life will be threatened by the temperature, (3) social security cards for all household members and a picture ID for the head of household.

PLEASE BE SURE to BRING:

• Picture ID

• Social Security card

• Final notice for help with utilities

• Eviction notice for help with rent/mortgage

• Payments Stubs (if working)

• Any other financial information (food stamps, disability, etc.)

Medical Ministry

For non-emergency medical services, tooth extractions, or non-narcotic prescriptions, please visit the medical ministry during our hours of operation listed below. To qualify for medical services, you must be a resident of Buncombe County, not have medical health insurance, and meet the income eligibility guidelines set forth by state. If you have a true emergency, please visit the emergency room immediately.

PLEASE BE SURE TO BRING:

• Picture ID

• Proof of residency (only if your ID is out of county or state bring something that verifies you are currently living in Buncombe County)

• Any medications you are currently taking

Homeless Services

Veterans Employment & Training Services

To apply for short-term employment training, please call us at (828) 258-5314 and ask about the Veterans' Workforce Investment Program (VWIP). All veterans with at least one day of credible active service are eligible except those with dishonorable discharges. VWIP services include comprehensive case management, pertinent referrals to assist in identifying and overcoming barriers to employment, classes at local community colleges or other schooling for higher wage positions or continuing education credits to allow for promotion  and employment maintenance, direct placement for on-the-job training with local employers, assistance in acquiring specific schooling and employment needs, and follow-up.

Supportive Services for Veteran Families

To receive housing counseling services, healthcare, personal financial planning services, income support services, legal services, and/or childcare, call (828) 259-5314 and ask for the SSVF intake coordinator. Through these services, our goal is to improve housing stability for low-income veteran families through the SSVF Program, and is a  26-county regional effort to bring an end to homelessness among veterans. SSVF Specialists support veterans by providing case management, assistance in obtaining VA benefits, and coordination of community resources. We will also assist veterans by seeking to remove barriers to housing, providing temporary financial assistance with rent, security deposits, transportation, utilities and utility deposits, and open pathways to sustainable housing.
